Whose Opinion Matters?

Dear Dee:
My girlfriend is nice, pretty and smart. But my sister called her a slut and says she's ugly. What should I do?

Unless your sister is all-knowing or has some piece of information about your girlfriend that you don't have (like she gets around or something), then just ignore your sister and go with your gut. If you like this girl and you believe she's nice, pretty and smart, and you want to be with her, then who gives a rip what your sister says? She's entitled to her own opinion and it doesn't have to be the same as yours.

Your sister could just be saying these things to get a rise out of you -- and as her brother, you should be able to tell whether she's serious or just hassling you. You've grown up with her, so don't forget she knows how to push your buttons! But also don't undercut the family bond here, and if your sister really has reasons for believing negative things about your girl, let her vent those to you, just to make sure you have all the information.

Again, go with your gut and you'll be able to tell what's going on with your sis and her comments.
