Dear Dee:
My best friend has all of a sudden lost a ton of weight. She is 14 years old and is completely flat, when she used to not be. I have spoken to her and she has lost her period as well, but she thinks it is because her body is changing and that is why it is like three months overdue.
She told me she is 87 pounds and I am really worried about her. She looks very pale and is always cold. She also eats very little and exercises an excessive amount. I am really scared for her. What should I do?
You should talk to an adult you trust immediately about this. And if there isn't anyone you can think of off the bat, consider reaching out to the school nurse or your health/PE teacher.
It sounds like your friend is seriously depriving her body of much-needed nutrients to keep her developing, growing and strong. The coldness and loss of a period are definitely indications of her having a real problem.
I, of course, am no doctor and just encourage you to help your friend immediately. Please print out our hotlines and give them to her -- and if you're comfortable doing it, talk to HER parents. I'd imagine they're worried, too.
But please don't waste any time in talking to an adult. Your friend needs help.
