She Had Her Chance, Now It's Mine

Dear Dee:
I like this boy and I want to ask him out but he asked my best friend out last night. She said no, and so I was going to ask him out.

But now my friend is having second thoughts. I have liked this boy forever. She doesn't even like him.

I really like this boy and my friend knows that. I have never asked a boy out before. Now I have finally worked up the courage to ask him and I am really sad. I really want to ask him out. Would it be OK since my friend said no to him? She had her chance, right?

Well, I'm kinda thinkin' since your friend said ‘no' to this guy that he's now fair game (not like I'm comparing this guy to a herd of deer or anything). But, seriously. She wasn't interested.

You can continue to talk to your friend about this - and ask her to really figure out whether she
likes this guy or is just after him because you are. By doing this, she might just snap out of it and realize her interest isn't genuine. Of course that would be ideal. But ...then again, she may decide she likes him.

Just be careful. It's awesome you've built up the courage to ask him out and everything. And if he's a smart guy, he'll say ‘yes.' But it might be wise to let him cool off a little from his most recent rejection - and then approach him. You don't want to catch him while he's still kind of bitter.
Good luck!
